Beta Stick with Autoclip Carabiner - a photo on Flickriver

The Beta Stick is designed for the placement of carabiners in hard to reach places. It is here holding a carabiner which has its own trigger mechanism for propping the gate open. When this trigger is pulled back by the pull of a hooked rope or whatever, the gate snaps shut.

The white rope hook was added by me. The beta stick extends out to twelve feet.

This kind of carabiner is an extension of the old arborist's trick of propping a carabiner gate open with a twig with a Y-shaped end so it can be used on the end of a clip stick. In fact this particular rather lightweight carabiner was withdrawn by the manufacturer after a trial showed that it wasn't resistant enough to the twists of side loads for fall protection in the long drops which can occur in lead rock climbing. It is, however, (IMHO) quite strong enough for rope access support, and the much shorter falls typical in arborist work.

This carabiner when snapped shut is not locked. Arborists often prefer the extra security of autolocking carabiners, because of the possibilities of nearby twiggery opening a carabiner. There is at least one autolocking carabiner which is also autoclipping.
