Worship and Fellowship - a photo on Flickriver

            Where I live churches are ubiquitous. Even in such an expansive state, it's difficult finding locations barren of ecclesiastical monuments, be it mere shanties adorning  symbols of the Trinity or full scale urban capital improvement projects spanning entire city blocks. Likewise, in the remotest west Texas locations, circumferences encompassing a radius of 30 miles or more uninhabited by even a small gas station, a place of worship usually is the only man-made blemish to nature's majestic horizon (well, that and a pump jack or three, of course, or those monstrous wind turbines).

According to a 2010 religious census, there were 27,248 congregations in my state, the largest number of any state in the USA, and approximately 11 million Christian adherents. Of these 11 million, a little more than 1 million profess as preeminent the doctrine of John Wesley, at least as much as can be expected from followers of the temperate congregation. 

If you're of such persuasion and live in Fort Worth, you might attend the First United Methodist Church in downtown, founded in 1874, the eponymous name revealing as well when the pious renditions of scripture by this sect planted its first pulpit in my hometown. No, I don't attend but I do appreciate church architecture and am fascinated by the tremendous capital outlays devoted, particularly when schools and local parks struggle to fund necessary and practical improvements or find their coffers barren of a single coin. Here's what the First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth looks like today.
