            A colleague pointed me to a wonderful steam event in Brooks, Oregon.  It was held over two weekends every summer and there were some wonderful things on display.  There were traditions, such as the noon whistles.  There were tasty foods, such as the ice cream churned by steam-powered paddles.  There were kind, friendly people.  And it was a giant photo-op from what I experienced.  It was wonderful.

[Correction} It's become a horror, my memory.  I'd completely forgotten which camera I used for this event.

In 2006 I took a Mamiya RZ with 110mm f/2.8.  The edges of the frame are distinctly different from those of the Mamiya 7.  So when I got looking carefully at these photos I realized my earlier mistake.  These are not Mamiya 7 images, these are Mamiya RZ.

The Mamiya 7 was like and very much like a giant Leica RF camera.  The Mamiya RZ was like a giant Hasselblad, only MUCH more reliable and MUCH easier to use than the Swedish device.  I could tell stories about Hasselblad "reliability" and Zeiss lens "superiority."  These Mamiya were wonderful to use and I sometimes wish I still had them (though film costs are through the roof, making things impractical from an economic perspective, not to mention that I no longer have any access to wet-darkroom tools).

I souped Kodak TMax100 in Rodinol that was diluted 200:1, semi-stand for nearly an hour.  I can see the bromide drag in the corners and wished I'd stuck with Kodak D76.  Alas, I was looking for some sort of negative processing magic and was willing to run the risk of ruining the result.  Truth be known, I never found the magic.
