"The Legend of General Dibrell's Revolver

The revolver was shipped from the colt manufacturing company in Hartford Connecticut on April 3, 1861, to it's New York Office.
On September 4, 1862, George DIbrell formed the 8th Tennessee Cavalry referred to as the "Independent Partisan Rangers."  The unit was made up of 921 men primarily from White, Putnam, & adjoining counties.  A revolver was presented to Col. George Gibbs Dibrell by friends and citizens of Sparta at the formation of the unit.  The unit marched from Sparta to Murfreesboro to become part of Brigadier, General Nathan Bedford Forrest's brigade.  While at Murfreesboro, the regiment was issued 400 flint-lock muskets and 600 sabres.  The 8th Tennessee Cavalry was involved in a remarkable number of battles and skirmishes throughout the Civil War.
On May 5th, 1865, Gen. Dibrell's unit surrendered to Capt. Lot Abrahams of the 4th Iowa Cavalry regiment near Washington, Georgia while protecting the Confederate Archives.
By command of General James H. Wilson, the officers were allowed to retain their personal sidearms and horses, but, the enlisted men were to be dismounted & disarmed.
The parolees of Dibrell's Tennessee Brigade proceeded to march in military order towards Chattanooga where they were to receive rations for the rest of this march home.
In Chattanooga, the Provost Marshall would not honor the terms of the surrender & all private property was confiscated including Gen. Dibrell's personal revolver.  Gen. Dibrell appealed to the regional commander, but to no avail.  The Provost Marshall, who was a member of the 138th Indiana, took the pistol home as a war souvenir.
In the 1950's, an insurance salesman named Virgil Mylin in Wabash, Indiana purchased the revolver from a family auction for his Colt collection.
In 1997, Tom Lopiano of Southport, Connecticut, obtained the revolver for his collection.  Mr. Lopiano sold the revolver to the citizens of White County where it will remain forever.
