bocas town - a photo on Flickriver

            The first stop on our cruise, after exiting the canal into the Caribbean, was the Bocas del Toro archipelago, where we anchored just outside its principal city of the same name, broadly known as Bocas Town, perched on a headland separated by an isthmus from the largest island, Isla Colón.  Like many such locales, the architecture was heavy on waterfront porches and festive colours, and transport was entirely by water taxis, given the archipelago spans fifty proper isles and cays and innumerable smaller islets and piles.  Just across a narrow band of water is the tiny Isla Carenero, where whatever modest pretension to grandeur Bocas Town has give way to lowslung bungalows and holiday houses, even if it's really just a minute's trip away by water taxi.
