ii vitners ii awesome - a photo on Flickriver

            Our final stop of the day, for which we were superabundantly late, was II Vintners, located in an unsupposing asphalt parking lot off the main drag.  The interior could not have been more surprising, replete with comfy furinture, a summer league basketball game, and walls full of memorabilia that could have come off a college dorm room wall -- we learned some of it had.

Our tasting was led by the winemaker himself, David, who was utterly charming at the head of our table, seemingly making up our progression as he went, subject to calls from the floor.  It was a hoot from start to finish, as II Vintners prides itself on its esoteric offerings.  After starting with a Grenache Blanc, we moved on to a Riesling called simply Das Riesling (after they ended up saddled with the vintage when the German importer they had made it for went bust), and thence onward to an orange wine he called the OG in lighthearted tribute to the fact he iconoclastically made it from Gewurtzraminer rather than the traditional Pinot Gris.  I actually liked an orange wine, for once -- it was so perfumed it was almost like imbibing ambrosial poupurri
