Aerfer Ariete - a photo on Flickriver

Aerfer Ariete

            This is the Aerfer Ariete (Aries) prototype serial MM 569, preserved at the Italian Air Force Museum near Bracciano, Italy. A refined development of the earlier Sagittario 2 jet fighter demonstrator, the Ariete was intended to potentially go into production as a fighter for the Italian Air Force, but this did not happen and only two prototypes were completed. The type first flew in March 1958 powered by a 3,600 lb thrust Roll Royce Derwent IX engine, plus a 1,800 lb thrust Rolls Royce Soar RS.2 auxiliary engine for additional power at take off and in the climb. the Ariete was supersonic with a maximum speed of 699 mph.

The manufacturer, Aerfer was an Italian aircraft company active in the 1950s and 1960s (eventually absorbed into what is now Leonardo through various mergers).
