            Fiat G.55 Centauro at the Italian Air Force Museum. The G.55 entered service with the Regia Aeronautica in April 1943 and following the Armistice with the Allies continued to serve with the Aeronautica Nazionale Republicana (ANR). It was regarded as one of the best Italian wartime fighter designs. Powered by a 1,475 HP Italian-built Daimler Benz DB 605 A-1 engine it had a maximum speed of 387 mph, was agile and was well armed with two 12.7mm machine guns in the nose cowling, a 20mm Mauser canon firing through the propeller hub and another two in the wings. However, like most Italian fighters the design was labour intensive to manufacture and so production rates were low. 

Post-war, many already built surplus G.55 airframes were married to Roll Royce Merlins due to insufficient stocks of DB-605 engines. Designated G.59A these were used by Italy and also exported. This particular aircraft is one such example (MM 53265) which has been converted back to a G.55 configuration by fitting a DB 605.

The tri-motor in the background is a Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero (MM45508).
