Chapelle Palatine de la cathédrale d'Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, Deutschland (Allemagne)

            La chapelle palatine d’Aix-la-Chapelle était la chapelle privée de Charlemagne. Commencée vers 792, consacrée en 804 et achevée en 805, elle fait partie du palais d'Aix-la-Chapelle. Elle contient les restes de Charlemagne et a été le site de couronnements pendant environ 600 ans. Elle a été intégrée dans l'actuelle cathédrale d'Aix-la-Chapelle. 
Charlemagne a fait commencer la construction de la chapelle palatine vers 792, en même temps que celle des autres bâtiments du palais. Il s'agit d'un regroupement de différents bâtiments nécessaires à l'exercice du pouvoir et à la vie d'une cour.
La construction de l'ensemble a duré environ douze ans. Il s'agit d'une période de construction relativement courte par rapport à l'ampleur du chantier. Le palais en lui-même a été occupé dès l'an 800. Tandis que la chapelle qui a été dédiée à la Vierge Marie a été consacrée par le pape Léon III en 804. 
Le plan est très élaboré (chapelle de « disposition originale » d'après le chroniqueur Eginhard), puisqu'il consiste en un octogone central de 16,54 mètres de diamètre et en un déambulatoire hexadécagonal (polygone à seize pans). Dans le déambulatoire, il y a huit travées hexagonales (voûtées en arêtes, pas de doubleaux). On passe du plan octogonal central au plan hexadécagonal périphérique par l'adjonction de voûtains (des quartiers de voûtes) triangulaires.
La coupole, à huit pans, culmine à plus de 33 mètres de hauteur. Elle est constituée d'une voûte d'arêtes, sans trompes ni pendentifs, étant donné qu'il n'y a pas à passer d'un plan carré à un plan octogonal, les murs sur lesquels s'appuie la coupole formant déjà un octogone. Le sommet de la coupole est un simple point de jonction des voûtains.

La mosaïque ornant la coupole a disparu au XVIIIe siècle, mais elle est connue par une gravure et quelques descriptions. Ainsi, y était représenté un Christ en majesté (« trônant dans le ciel »), ainsi que les vingt-quatre vieillards de l'Apocalypse. La mosaïque actuelle, de style néo-byzantin, est l'œuvre de l'architecte belge Jean-Baptiste Bethune, exécutée entre 1879 et 1881 par les ateliers de Antonio Salviati à Venise. 

The Palatine Chapel of Aachen was Charlemagne's private chapel. Begun around 792, consecrated in 804 and completed in 805, it is part of the Palace of Aachen. It contains the remains of Charlemagne and was the site of coronations for around 600 years. It was integrated into the current Aachen Cathedral.
Charlemagne began construction of the Palatine Chapel around 792, at the same time as that of the other palace buildings. It is a grouping of different buildings necessary for the exercise of power and the life of a court.
The construction of the complex lasted approximately twelve years. This is a relatively short construction period compared to the scale of the project. The palace itself was occupied from the year 800. While the chapel which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary was consecrated by Pope Leo III in 804.
The plan is very elaborate (chapel of “original layout” according to the chronicler Eginhard), since it consists of a central octagon of 16.54 meters in diameter and a hexadecagonal ambulatory (sixteen-sided polygon). In the ambulatory, there are eight hexagonal bays (groined vaults, no transoms). We move from the central octagonal plan to the peripheral hexadecagonal plan by the addition of triangular vaults (quarters of vaults).
The eight-sided dome rises to more than 33 meters in height. It is made up of a groined vault, without horns or pendants, given that there is no need to go from a square plan to an octagonal plan, the walls on which the dome rests already forming a octagon. The top of the dome is a simple point of junction of the vaults.

The mosaic adorning the dome disappeared in the 18th century, but it is known from an engraving and some descriptions. Thus, a Christ in majesty (“enthroned in heaven”) was represented, as well as the twenty-four old men of the Apocalypse. The current mosaic, in neo-Byzantine style, is the work of the Belgian architect Jean-Baptiste Bethune, executed between 1879 and 1881 by the workshops of Antonio Salviati in Venice.
