            Not since 9/11 has a day appeared to have such gargantuan implications for our World as Thursday 24 February 2022 when Vladimir Putin ordered the bloody invasion of a fraternal Slavic neighbour whose only crime is to be a fledgling democracy looking to cement that status with EU and NATO membership. 
Ukraine has been denied direct military support by western nations fearful of triggering a wider conflict with a corrupted nuclear power controlled by a kleptocratic psychopath. Western sanctions may have an effect in time but in the meantime Ukraine and its citizens are left to do the actual fighting and to endure the grotesque physical suffering. 
This invasion is a monstrous outrage perpetrated by a man who has never had any compunction about killing those who stand in his way. Putin has however seriously miscalculated: the united Ukrainians will fight the Russian conscript army hard, Ukraine is a big country and Putin's supply lines long and expensive, and the sanctions will cause the Russian economy to collapse. Ukraine is bigger than France and even 150,000 occupying Russian soldiers amongst 44,000,000 Ukrainians united in their hatred of them cannot hope to control Ukraine in the long term. 
Like 1917, the ruling elite of Russia may well soon pay the long overdue price for their thieving and utter corruption at the expense of the Russian people as their own people say "enough"; unlike 1917, the elite have control of nuclear weapons, and so this is a very dangerous time. 
In the meantime, the human tragedy will be that, as ever, it is the ordinary people of Ukraine who will suffer, as will their Russian counterparts. The hope must be that soon these Ukrainians on Whitehall and the thousands of others there today will have something to celebrate with the withdrawal of Russia and the collapse of Putin and his corrupt gangster regime, despite the lack of military intervention by the West.
