Here's a short intro I wrote for Holga Argentina a few years ago -- and still true today.

Photography and technology have always been intertwined. My first camera in the 1980s was a Nikon FG, one of the earliest models that could provide automatic exposure utilizing what the user’s manual described as its “tiny electronic brain.” That’s known as a computer chip these days, and modern cameras are teeming with them. 

But not, of course, the Holga.
 
So for photographers, using a Holga can be a carefree search for happy accidents or a careful exercise in matching subjects and lighting conditions to the inflexible demands -- a single aperture, a single shutter speed -- of the camera. Both approaches are good. One requires us to use our actual brains (and perhaps a neutral density filter or two), while the other reminds us that mystery and luck have always been at the heart of photography.
 
I’m not sure why I enjoy using low-tech cameras as much as I do. I think it is because I can’t predict the role optical distortion will play in each negative. As I develop the film, it’s not a question of whether the photographs will be good or bad -- it doesn’t matter. What I’m eager to see is whether any of them possess the magical quality of timelessness that is particular to photography, but so very rare.
