Magellanic Pingüinos - a photo on Flickriver

            I recently returned from a trip to the far southern reaches of the South American continent, an adventure I'd been dreaming about for over 25 years. While there, we were just in time to see the Magellanic Penguins on Isla Magdalena before they headed out to sea after the end of the breeding season. The island is part of Monumento Natural de Los Pingüinos, where 65,000 breeding pairs of Magellanic Penguins congregate for the Austral summer to raise their chicks. Suffice to say that between the clownish waddling, the incessant near braying, and the guano, the place delivers to all the senses. To support the penguin colony, and the tourist dollars it attracts, the Chilean government has banned fishing within a 50 km radius of the island. This means that the adults don't have to compete with humans and swim overly far for fish, which in turn means that the chicks are better fed, and more likely to successfully fledge.

The penguins themselves appear unperturbed by the humans strolling by to gawk. However, after being told not to try and touch the penguins by the guide, one of the Slovak tourists decided to ignore that advice. He quickly changed his mind and heeded it though, when the penguin he chose to bother snapped round quickly and looked more than ready to try Slovak sausage fingers for an afternoon delicacy.
