On the Verge of Greatness - a photo on Flickriver

            Two of my hiking companions gaze into the icy expanse of the Glaciar Grey from near the crest of the Paso John Garner, Torres del Paine, Chile. The glacier is approximately 3 miles across (5 km) and stretches for nearly 20 miles (30 km) from the cirque of its origin that is visible here in the upper right, to the terminus in Lago Grey.

The descent to the glacier from the top of the paso ranked highly on the list of Steep Trails With Full Pack. Not knowing we would meet him the next day, we spent some time speculating as to why John Garner must have had such a great distaste for switchbacks, preferring that his namesake trail plunge down to the ice as quickly as possible, with the aid of ropes and cables. When I unexpectedly had the opportunity to eat breakfast with Mr. Garner, I thought it would be impertinent to pursue that line of thought, particularly since the fellow pictured on the left admitted out-loud to Mr. Garner that we had all assumed he had died years ago. Being a good-natured fellow, he replied that we weren't the first.
