Eventide Asters - a photo on Flickriver

Eventide Asters

            A bright cluster of yellow Asters commingles with the spent grass leaves from a season past as sunset lights up the sky, Boulder Open Space, Colorado.

Spring has been a relatively cold, wet, and protracted affair along the Front Range this year, and last week it snowed 4" of cold, heavy precipitation. The white, heavy weight of it broke branches, bent sapling apple trees to the ground, and made a mockery of anyone trying to start a vegetable garden. However, the effect on the wildflowers is that they are well-watered and bursting with color. The moisture-heavy clouds have made for some color in the sky as well, once the sun slopes off beyond the horizon.

It was finally warm enough today to begin glueing oak planks into posts for the next phase of the apple press project. Colder temperatures are not good for drying times. Once the posts are constructed, I will glue together wider planks in order to make the beams of the press, then more steps to make the posts and beams true, notch the posts, and assemble. The power will come from a 12-ton bottle jack, and I should be able to press over 100-120 lbs (45-54 kg) of ground apples at a time. Most of the apple flowers seem to have survived the snow, so I may even get to use the press this fall!
