Flaunting It

            Paintbrush flowers (Castilleja sp.), resplendent with an incredible magenta hue, point the way to the high ridges and alpine summits near the shore of Crater Lakes and near the Continental Divide, James Peak Wilderness, Colorado.

It was a cooler, wetter spring and early summer along the Front Range this year, and  the wildflowers consequently reached their apex a little bit later than in years prior. My youngest son and his friend were cajoled into joining us older folks (my wife and me), and so I made sure to make it worth their adolescent while by bringing the backpacking stove and fixings for a hot ramen lunch, with freeze-dried green beans and chicken added for good measure. My son and I also took it upon ourselves to make good on the annual ritual of stripping down to boxer shorts and jumping into the lake. Note that we also discovered a snow bank persisting in the trees not far from the lake shore. I can report that, verily, the water was disorientingly frigid. Such ridiculousness is oddly pleasing.
