Battle of Chickamauga – CSA Brigadier General Bushrod R. Johnson Monument (Catoosa County, Georgia)

            Monument to the men who fought under Confederate Brigadier General Bushrod R. Johnson in the Chickamauga Unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Catoosa County, Georgia.   The monument was erected in September 1977 and is the newest in the park.  

Union troops suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Chickamauga (September 18-20, 1863) and retreated to safety in Chattanooga where two months later the entrenched Union forces defeated the Confederates during the Battle of Chattanooga (November 23-25, 1863).

The Chickamauga Battlefield was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 as the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (NRHP No. 66000274).   The Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefield sites were designated as the first national battlefield park created by the federal government to memorialize significant military engagements of the Civil War.
