Kalalua Trail - a photo on Flickriver

Kalalua Trail

            [Hawaii Vacation 2015, Day 9 of 11]

My wife wanted to see the sunset, so we drove north to Ke'e Beach, which as far north as you can get on paved road.

After setting up our beach umbrella, my wife and kids hung out at the beach.  I had decided to hike on Kalalua Trail, as I wasn't interested in another capture of a beach sunset.  Since sunset was rapidly approaching, I limited myself to a half-hour hike in, which took me approximately 0.8 miles onto the trail.

I stopped at a spot with an unobstructed view of the Na Pali coast towards the north and proceed to set up my tripod.  As I waited for sunset an older man stopped to chat with me, and told me that he used to often sit on the ledge at this very spot many years ago, to watch the sunset.  He also said that when he was 27 years old, he had hiked to the waterfall and beach further down the trail, and came across a group of six beautiful and "perfectly proportioned" women who proceeded to remove their tops to go swimming.  He said he finally got the nerve to talk to one of the women and discovered they were NFL cheerleaders.  I can't be sure this was a true story, but it sure was interesting!

For this shot I was looking north and my intent was to capture the shoreline lit up with warm lighting during the sunset.  The sunset ended up fizzling rather quickly, but I did manage to capture some warm lighting on the distant peninsulas, which resulting in some nice contrasting colors.  I suppose it was worth the mosquitoes that rudely ignored my insect repellant.

I hiked back to Ke'e Beach behind a man and his elderly father (walking with two hiking poles), and was happy to share my LED flashlight with them as the light faded.  The man said he's from Los Angeles but now lives in Kauai.
