6/365 Jan 6, 2019. Rockville is Mudville

Rockville Bike Cyclocross Series starts up when every other race series ends. It goes from January through February, which is late, but because it's pretty much the only time of year we're likely to get rain, for a few of us, this is "peak season" for cyclocross.

Today was the opener. It rained the whole day for the two races of the day. My little guy now is skilled and fast enough to do the race with the adults, and so instead of riding along, I get to take pics (well, if I don't care about warming up for my own race which is right after his).

This is lap one, first time over the barriers. He's in the middle of doing a running jump back on his bike (called a "remount").

Kai did great - and led all the "juniors" and some adults until a late flat tire slowed him down and he was caught just before the line. He should fire his mechanic, but didn't seem upset and said it was a really fun course.

He and I both finished second in our respective small fields. A good, fun day. Even though these are the smallest races of the year, I get the most excited for them.

photo: 70-200 @ 110mm, at f2,8. Looks like I had it at +.33 stop, unintentional, from the previous spot that was backlit. Increased "clarity" and "dehaze" a bit in processing to showcase the rain.

learned: my camera/lens combo didn't do so well focusing when backlit. and I should have a waterproof camera bag.
