Yes, it's a goat. One of several.

The castle of Coucy is today an impressive ruin on top of a hill overlooking a vast area - and it once was a very impressive fortification.

There had been a castle on this location since the 10th century, but this one was built in the 1220's by the hugely successful Enguerrand III, Lord of Coucy (1182-1242) - also known as Enguerrand le Grand (the Great). His successor Enguerrand VII (who features in the historian Barbara Tuchman's book "A distant mirror) later improved the castle in the 1380's. It was finally abandoned during the Fronde (1648-1653).

The ruins had a revival of interest in them in the 19th century when the place was renovated by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. And it was occupied by German troops in the first world war - it was finally destroyed by the Germans blowing up the keep (it is not known if it was due to its strategic position or just an act of vandalism).

It is now a Monument historique (and has been since 1862).
