Homemade Hostess Cupcake Cake - a photo on Flickriver

Here's January's cake. (I really do not need to bake a cake every month, but I can see it happening.)

Smittenkitchen.com's homemade Devil Dog/Ding Dong/Hostess Cupcake Cake can, with a few alrerations, be made to look and taste like any of those snack cakes, plus a few more (Little Debbies, etc.)

Things of note:
* the white marshmallow frosting between the layers and used in the swirl on top) is a near perfect match for what it copies. It may also be the stickiest substance known to man.

* I used the recipe alteration she gives where she cuts the ingredients down by 2/3, then used a 10 inch pan, and it still made a very large cake. Wow.

* I broke out the brand new pastry bag, but given my temper at balky inanimate objects, the bag itself, and the very sticky icing, I quickly realized I hadn't the patience. This is why the swirl on top looks as lame as it does. If I had less temper and more patience, it would have looked great.

* Ganache is, as ever, OMG delicious.

* This is the moistest cake ever, and tastes and smells exactly like a Hostess Cupcake. Mmmmm.

* Yesterday I received a package of wonderful homemade cookies from a good friend, so now I have this cake and those cookies sitting in my home. I'm going to die of sugar, but it'll be a happy death.
