Grace Episcopal Church - a photo on Flickriver

When the English colony of Carolina was founded at Charles Town in 1670, the settlers were granted the right to worship in any church, unlike their contemporaries who settled in New England. The colonists who came here came to prosper on the bounty of the land. By the mid-nineteenth century, the Anglican Church in South Carolina had evolved into a strong Episcopal Diocese. By 1846, even though there were four Episcopal churches in the city, the growth of the population and a strong religious fervor led to the founding of Grace Church in the heart of the city. On February 16, 1846, Grace Church was admitted to the Diocese of South Carolina. In 1848, the church was consecrated by Bishop Christopher Edward Gadsden. The contract for the church building was $16,200 without the steeple, but a provision was made to build the steeple for $3,000 additional "should the vestry determine to have one."

By 1860, the "dangers, toils and snares" began to appear. Many parishioners died during the Civil War, and Grace was damaged by the Federal shelling of the city. The gunners aimed for the tall church steeples. While other churches in the city were forced to close either from having been damaged or in fear of the safety of the congregation, Grace remained open until January 1864. A single shell destroyed part of the clerestory and the vestry was forced to suspend services. The Church was reopened in March of 1865.

The next twenty years were years of poverty and hardship. In August of 1886, another disaster struck in the form of a major earthquake. The church was damaged almost beyond repair. Repairs were made with costs nearly exceeding the original construction cost, but the scars are still visible today. In the fall of 1911, a serious hurricane damaged the building. This time, the congregation was able to actually improve the building. In September of 1989, Hurricane Hugo again damaged the church. The congregation used this time to restore the church to its earlier appearance.
