Bijelo Polje (Montenegro) – Waiting Room at the Train Station

(EN) The next day I begun my way home: Having entered Kosovo from Macedonia, I couldn’t continue to Serbia, because I wouln’t get a Serbian entry stamp at the Kosovo-Serbian border, potentially causing problems when leaving Serbia (Serbia regards the entrance to Kosovo from non-Serb territory as illegal immigration).
So I made a detour and went first to Montenegro in order to enter Serbia legally. I took a bus from Peja to Berane – it’s an interesting trip across high mountain passes and through the Sandžak region. Berane itself is an uninspiring and boring town. I spent there only one and a half hour and then went on to Bijelo Polje, located on the railway line Bar – Belgrade. I wanted to take a night train to Belgrade from there and than take the direct train from Belgrade to Zurich, the same one I had used when coming to the Balkans until Strizivojna-Vrpolje.
In Bijelo Polje I found out that the next train to Serbia went all the way to Novi Sad, omitting the main station of Belgrade. Since I anyway didn’t want to go to Belgrade, but back home, I then bought a ticket to Stara Pazova, a town located between Belgrade, Novi Sad and the Croatian border. According to the timetable, the train would arrive before four o’clock in the night, but fortunately on can relay on longer delays in Serbia. So I could sleep until the coach steward woke me up after five o’clock – I was glad about that, because otherwise it would have been impossible to recognise the small station of Stara Pazova which wasn’t illuminated.

(DE) Am nächsten Tag begann ich meine Heimreise: Weil ich von Mazedonien her in den Kosovo eingereist war, konnte ich nicht direkt nach Serbien weiterreisen, da man so keinen serbischen Einreisestempel bekommt und dafür bei der Ausreise gebüsst werden kann.
Deshalb machte ich einen Umweg und fuhr erst nach Montenegro, um von dort aus legal nach Serbien einzurisen. Ich fuhr mit dem Bus von Peja nach Berane – eine sehr interessante Busfahrt über hohe Berge und durch den Sandžak. Berane hingegen ist eine langweilige und unspektakuläre Stadt. Ich verbrachte dort nur anderthalb Stunden und fuhr dann mit einem anderen Bus weiter nach Bijelo Polje, das an der Eisenbahnlinie Bar – Belgrad liegt. Ich wollte von dort aus mit dem Nachtzug mal erst nach Belgrad reisen und dann am nächsten Tag mit dem Direktzug Belgrad-Zürich (mit dem ich auf dem Hinweg bis Strizivojna-Vrpolje gefahren war) nach Hause.
In Bijelo Polje fand ich aber heraus, dass der nächste Zug nach Serbien nach Novi Sad fuhr und deshalb in Belgrad nicht am Hauptbahnhof halten würde. Weil ich nicht nach Belgrad wollte, nahm ich ihn trotzdem und fuhr damit bis nach Stara Pazova, zwischen Belgrad, der kroatischen Grenze und Novi Sad. Der Zug hätte dort irgendwann vor vier Uhr ankommen sollen. Da man sich aber auch bei der serbischen Bahn auf mehrstündige Verspätungen verlassen kann, konnte ich dennoch bis etwas nach fünf Uhr schlafen, bis mich der Schlafwagenbetreuer weckte – darüber war ich auch sehr froh, in der Nacht hätte ich den kleinen unbeleuchteten Bahnhof wohl kaum erkannt.
