Tatala boats in Yayo tribe 椰油部落拼板舟

            Yami traditional fishing boats are not made from a single tree trunk or log, and thus are not canoes. They are made from multiple planks shaped with an ax. These planks are joined together with wooden dowels and rattan. Once the boat is finished, patterns are carved and the boat is painted red, white and black. Chicken feather decorations adorn the bow and stern.

There are two types of Yami fishing boats, the small boat, tatara, is composed of 21 wood planks, and the larger fishing boat, chinurikuran, consists of 27 planks. The streamlined boats are decorated totems and vivid colors. The boats exemplify the Yami ethnobotanical knowledge as well as their exquisite handicraft skills - to build one’s own boat is an indicator of maturity for man.

Lanyu has six tribes, including the Yeyou, Fisherman, Hongtou, Langdao, Dongqing, and Yeyin. The six villages have their own different migration history, myths, legends and cultures and still show a high degree of autonomy. It is up to the tribes to manage public affairs, each with their own traditional areas.
