Pingxi Lantern Festival 22 - a photo on Flickriver

            On the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, people who follow the Lunar calendar celebrate the Lantern Festival.  In Taiwan, one of the most popular places to celebrate is in Pingxi.  In Pingxi, people write their wishes for the year on the sides of large paper lanterns, which are then filled with hot air from an fire which is supported in the balloon themselves, and the lanterns are left to go skyward.  People do this individually in the township, though just outside the township is the "official" launch area, where hundreds are let go in sync.  Being honest, I was not really prepared for how beautiful the lanterns looked as they headed to the sky.  I am not always the most awed guy, but I admit fully to gasping at first sight.
