Boardwalk at Mud Pond - a photo on Flickriver

            Mud Pond, located in Jefferson, New Hampshire, is the smallest of the three ponds in the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. The pond is accessible by the Mud Pond Trail, which consists of a raised ledge-pack trail, followed by a 900 foot boardwalk, a portion of which is seen in the photo above.  The trail is only about 0.6 miles, fairly flat, and is handicapped accessible.  Several switchbacks are intended to make wheelchair travel easier. The boardwalk ends in an observation platform located at the pond. 

The trail and pond are popular with birders, with unusual birds for this part of the country including Black-backed Woodpeckers, Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Palm Warblers, Boreal Chickadees, and Gray Jays. Wildlife seen at Mud Pond includes Black Bear, White-tailed Deer, Snowshoe Hare, and Moose.

Mud Pond Trail is located on Route 116 in Jefferson, NH, one mile east of the Whitefield / Jefferson town line.  When traveling in that direction, the sign marking Mud Pond and the drive-in parking lot will be found on the right side of the road.
