Life's too short to sleep alone... - a photo on Flickriver

This kitschy creation (view larger) is my modest tribute to Global Village 2 and Lunar Village, two Flickr groups being shut down by their founder. rgdaniel's announcement that they are closing, and why is an excellent read. Many thanks to the founder, admins and everyone who made the Global and Lunar Villages such fun places to pitch a tent once in a while. With or without the coveted launch ticket to the moon, it was a blast.

Even though I didn't use these groups much in recent months, I remember them with fondness from earlier Flickr days (only last year for me). It was great fun to post there, discover other fine photos and photographers, and get that modest thrill as the globes rolled in. Even if most were just a copy & paste of the group comment code, sometimes there were also meaningful comments, faves, visits back and forth, and even the start of some very good Flickr friendships. I first met many of my contacts and friends through Global Village 2, including some people who helped define for me what Flickr is and make it such a wonderful place to share photography and friendship.

There are very few groups that I'll remember with such fondness, but Global Village and Lunar Village do qualify. They will truly be missed. Sure, they were only Flickr groups, not people, so we can go easy on the sackcloth, ashes, funerals and lamentations. But I will at least post this silly tribute, and have a drink to the memory of these groups. I would have had the drink anyway, but still...
