Echoes of the Midland - a photo on Flickriver

            A shot from a couple of years ago catches DBS Shed 66147 about to exit the 29 yards long Peak Forest Junction Tunnel and take the reverse curve towards Buxton with the 14.10 Tunstead - Briggs ICI loaded limestone (6H22). At Buxton the train will reverse before making the final climb up to the Dowlow processing complex in the High Peak. 

As per its name, the line here used to be double tracked and, a few yards in front of the loco, the old Midland Railway route to Matlock, Derby and London veered off to the right. The earthworks are still there but all that remains of the trackbed is a narrow footpath through the copse. Back in the 1960s, and before the West Coast Mainline was electrified, BR introduced the Blue Pullman service between Manchester Central and London St Pancras - an exclusively First Class service intended to tempt Manchester's executives, as well as others who could afford it, to the delights of luxury rail travel. This proved to be the last hurrah for the old Midland Route seeing as once the newly electrified railway from Euston to Piccadilly was opened, there was little use for a relatively slow and meandering route through the Peak District, however wonderful the scenery was. The line north of Matlock was eventually closed in June 1968, on the approval of the then Labour Minister for Transport, Barbara Castle.  

I always intended to return to bag this shot again in duller weather but another go at the challenging processing seems to have delivered something reasonably acceptable.
