Bowie Race Track Road Bridge - a photo on Flickriver

            This old wooden bridge was built by the Washington Baltimore & Annapolis Electric Railroad in order to keep what was then known as Bowie Rd grade separated from the high speed interurban's double track mainline. The RR opened in 1908 but was abandoned a mere 27 years later in August of 1935. The bridge however, continued to be used for it's original purpose after the abandonment. This small remnant of the WB&A was picked up by the Pennsylvania Railroad that Fall after the WB&A was abandoned and was used as a tail track of a wye allowing the Pennsy's race track trains to be turned and then be ready for departure at the end of the day's races. The final race track train ran on April 17, 1971, just a couple of weeks before Amtrak started. The bridge remained in service however, until the late summer of 1988 when it was dismantled and replaced by a nondescript fill. Later on about 2001 or so, the old WB&A right of way through here was turned into a bike trail which included modifying the fill with a large culvert for bike traffic.
This image, looking south, was taken in August 1988 just days before the bridge was replaced by the fill, after a faithful 80 years of service. Note that the track is still in place being reclaimed by nature.
