Cavan - a photo on Flickriver

            My daughter's lovely step-son, and one of my go-to models. Christmas day portrait. Cavan looks so grown-up.  Where has the time gone?

I was holding the Speedlight in the air with my left hand and taking shots with my right. Not ideal, but I am constantly amazed at how well a single Speedlight does with a PowerSnoot attached. This could almost pass as a studio portrait, but Cavan was just sitting on the living room floor, playing with his Christmas pressies, and I asked him to look up for a second. Needed to do a minimum of processing. Just a touch of background burning. No backdrop was used. The PowerSnoot magically blacks out pretty much anything behind your subject. 

BTW, I can't seem to bring myself to take the 35mm f2 off my camera. It's one of my cheapest lenses, but is now my definite favourite for portraits. Someone on the IB recommended it a year or so ago, and I'm so glad I listened. Thank you, whoever you are! (Just looked it up. It was Trejack and it was nearly two years ago. Many thanks to him!)
