During this relative  peaceful period of English history,  houses no longer needed to be fortified   Glass was a very expencsive commodity, and rich people showed off their wealth  by having their architects provide as many huge windows as could be squeezed in .
Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, dubbed by the local people as "Hardwock Hall - More glass than wall",  was one . Here is another.
