The Cutty Sark, London ( before the fire )

It might amuse the viewer to know that whilst bending low enough to get an angle that excluded the surrounding high buildings, the photographer split his trousers enormously, and had to suffer a red faced walk back to his car at the far end of the foot tunnel under the Thames.

But what this site doesn't say is that on one of the return trips around the southern tip of Africa with a cargo of tea from Shanghai, the ship was struck by a ferrocious storm, with the waves being wgipped up by hurricane force winds. The ship took such a battering that she lost her huge rudder, together with its anchor post. Without any way of steering, the ship would soon be overwhelmed and capsize . The immensely experienced captain George Moodie ordered his carpenters and engineers to use whatever they could find on board to construct a makeshift anchor post and rudder, including rudimentary metal hinges. This they accomplished with the use of a forge constructed on the deck. With the ship being thrown about it wasn't long before the forge tipped over sending the white hot contents flying. The result was that the captain's own son was very badly burned and was disfigured for life.
The makeshift rudder was eventually fitted by the heroic crew, and worked well enough to save the ship and ride out the storm, saving the lives of all on board, She limped home, eventually getting back to England nine days later than her rival "The Thermopylae"
