Sunning and Waiting for Lunch - a photo on Flickriver

            This seven foot alligator was satisfied to stay still sunning herself and watch us walk by.  Odd behavior since they usually spash into the water and disappear whenever anyone comes into view.  The two german shepards we had with us didn't even notice the green monster lying still just 10 feet away.  Fortunately for us it was an uphill climb for the gator to get to where we were hiking.  No crop - 122mm on a DX camera yielded this full-frame close up.  Taken during a hike in the Cattail Marsh area alongside Tyrrell Park in Beaumont Texas.  American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).
