The La Proteccion de la Infancia, Incorporated, known as Gota De Leche was established in 1906, and formally as an organization in 1907 by several women who are involved in civic affairs (some of them from Asociación Feminista Filipina, such as Concepcion Felix de Calderon, Maria Arevalo, Librada Avelino, Trinidad Rizal, Asuncion Soriano, Helen Wilson, Carmen Manuel de Gerona and Maria Flores de Villamor.) Their goal is to supply healthy milk for children and infants, especially those in need. This building was designed in the Italian Renaissance with the adaptation to our climate. It was designed by Architect Arcadio Arellano and finished in 1914. After many adversaries, the building still survives today, and it received an Honourable Mention from the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2003. In August 2014, the National Museum of the Philippines declared the Gota de Leche building as an Important Cultural Property. That it is a fully-functioning heritage site that literally opens its doors to those in need (indigent children and mothers, and those displaced by Typhoon Yolanda) deserves another kind of award, entirely.

This spot is one of my personal favorites in Renacimiento Manila Sampaloc Heritage Walk.
