Rakaia Gorge - a photo on Flickriver

Rakaia Gorge

            The Rakaia Gorge is famous amongst sedimentologists for its glauconitic greensands (e.g. Folk et al., Detrital sedimentary rock classification and nomenclature for use in New Zealand, New Zealand J. Geol, 1970).  The region has a complicated geological history involving:

Permian/Triassic: Deposition of siltstones shale
Lower Cretaceous:  Orogenic  activity,  with  deformation  of  the mid-late Permian Maitai  Group (sandstones and limestones) and uplift resulting in a change from a marine to land environment.
Middle Cretaceous:  Period o£ erosion when the land-surface was reduced to a peneplain;    eruption  of  rhyolites  and  pitchstones (similar to obsidian, but with a higher water content)   followed  by andesites and andesitic breccias.·
Late Cretaceous:   Marine   transgression, formation of coal-measures,  followed  by  more  or. less  continuous deposition until Pliocene times.
Cenozoic: Intrusion of a gabbro sill into coal-measures.
Pliocene:   Compression  and uplift, characterised  by  block-faulting.
Pleistocene:  Period of  erosion giving rise to present topography, and including two  periods  of  extension  of  the Rakaia Valley glacier as far as this district.
