Tom Dark - 1945 Bugatti Type 73C Grand Prix Monoposto at the 2016 Goodwood Revival (Photo 1)

This stunning Bugatti Type 73C is chassis number 5 of 5, and is owned and raced by Tom Dark.

The back story to the Type 73C is fascinating, with the intention of Ettore Bugatti to fit the car with a new 1.5ltr supercharged engine using either one and two camshaft depending on the customers requirements (road or race use).

At the 1947 Paris Motor Show a 73C chassis was shown with both engine examples displayed alongside, however Ettore's death in August 1947 meant the project was shelved and the parts all put into storage, meaning that the 73C was never directly sold by Bugatti as a finished product.

The story then jumps forward 13 years to when Jean de Dobbeleer acquired the components to build chassis 001. Using the monoposto design from 1945 that was devised by Bugatti designer Antoine Pichetto, Dobbeleer built and then sold the car on, returning to the factory to get the components for 2 other cars, each being built and sold on.

Chassis 4 and 5 were both bought from the same storage by Bart Loyens and were sold as a pair to a number of different owners before being split up when Tom Dark acquired chassis 5 and chassis 4 was offered for sale through Bonhams by then owner John Barton.
