W&LLR Annual Gala – No. 10 Sir Drefaldwyn Loco 699 Leaves Welshpool Raven Square Station

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) is a preserved heritage 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge railway running 8 ½ miles between Welshpool west to the village of Llanfair Caereinion. I've mentioned it this way round as the trains currently run engine first in this direction even though the journeys start tender end first from Llanfair where most of the facilities are located.

The line was originally built in 1903 to allow local communities to travel and trade. It was first operated by Cambrian Railways, then Great Western and then British Railways before being closed in 1956 after only carrying freight from around 1931. In 1963 preservation work began and thanks to a group of far sighted enthusiasts, the line was restored and blossomed into the volunteer run service we see and enjoy to this day.
