Welsh Guardsman - a photo on Flickriver

Welsh Guardsman

Welsh Guardsman (WD 71516) has been a resident at the Severn Valley Railway since February 2020 and is owned by the Felinfoel Brewery.

She was built in Leeds for the War Department by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns in 1944 as Works Number 7170 as an 'Austerity 0-6-0ST' standard World War II shunting engine. The engine saw service for the National Coal Board in 1947 in Northumberland and Cynheidre Colliery near Llanelli. She ended up after the war being used as a source of spares at Pontarddulais before being saved by the Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum in Butetown, Cardiff which sadly closed in 1998. Thankfully however, its exhibits were redistributed including WD 71516.

She thus found her way to the Gwili Railway based at Bronwyddin in south-west Wales and was rebuilt using parts from other locomotives including the boiler from Hunslet No. 3822 and the cab and tank of Bagnall No 2758. The war department number 71516 was re-designated and she was named “Welsh Guardsman” in a special ceremony at Bronwydd Arms. The locomotive was last overhauled at Llangollen between 2011 and 2013, after which it was rededicated at a ceremony at Bronwydd Arms on 9 June 2014.

Pictures taken at the Open House Weekend held Saturday 6th to Sunday 7th April 2024 at the Severn Valley Railway (SVR). Passengers were able to get a closer look behind-the-scenes at areas not usually open to members of the public. This included the Bridgnorth Locomotive Works and Yard and Bridgnorth Carriage & Wagon Yard, selected signal boxes and the Class 17 D8568’s cab and engine room at Kidderminster.
