Winter light ...

            Winter light ... can be a stark thing. It arrives late, fades fast, and, in between, can be piercingly bright or near twilight. 

In general, I favour high-speed films for all but the most predictable of periods. Slow films often get left to clog up my flow as I wonder if I will manage to take the shot or not, and berate myself for being willing to be encumbered by many weighty cameras but no tripod ...

As a result, when, at the end of November, I found that the only film in my bag was a roll of FP4 Plus (a film I have not shot since perhaps 2005), I was rather perplexed.

Like many toe-dipping photographic amateurs, I have recently had a fairly extended period of trying out various films. Previously, I had never been particularly taken by FP4 Plus, preferring Ilford's Delta emulsions, and so this came as a double perplexity - for whatever reason, I had clearly decided to give it another go. But as a November film? I searched around and found various experiments in pushing FP4 plus, and decided to set the camera to what I think is ISO c. 500, and push-processed it for a little more than the @ISO 400 guide-times for 510 Pyro.

What an entirely remarkable result. Scanning straight from the negative, the contrast is close to useable, perhaps a touch punchy for some things, but not much. To my eye, grain seems well within the bounds of an ISO 400 film, and the acutance and rendition seem to be good. The morning before I processed this film, I took delivery of a bulk roll of Delta 400, and looking at these negatives makes me wonder if I have done quite the right thing!

And so, here we are. Some form of wintering leafy thing, at Nantyrarian in Wales, November 2022. Nikkormat EL, Micro-Nikkor 50/3.5. FP4 Plus @500 in 510 Pyro, semi-stand.
