A wonderful shot of the old town (city really, the place celebrated the 750th anniversary of receiving city rights in the 1990's!) of Veere.

It was probably taken on the same flight in the 1930's the unknown pilot took the pictures of my grandfather's 'Dijkhuis', just visible here in the far top right corner.

The water in the foreground is the end of the "Kanaal door Walcheren" or Walcheren Channel which runs right through the island from Vlissingen/Flushing via Middelburg to Veere. Originally of grea importance for trade, now still important for leasure boating since the Veerse Meer/ Lake Veere is a very attractive and popular place for watersports and tourism.

Of course, when this shot was taken there was hardly any watersports here. The Veere harbor, visible on the other, western edge of the town, was used for the local fishing fleet which roamed the Northsea (and further!) for centuries. The Veerse Meer was then known as "Veerse Gat"/Veere Gap because it was still directly connected to the Northsea, its tides and weather conditions.

In the town we see a number of seriously old buildings: the giant medieval church lower left, the gothic city hall with its slim and elegant tower, the white mill, called 'the cow' on the outskirts and the low gate tower by the entrance of the harbor, the last of the old fortifications which kept the city safe for centuries.

Nobody knew it at the time of course but in this picture the photographer also recorded another place that would become important in my family's history: the little farmhouse on the western edge of the town would in the 1970's be bought by my parents who rebuilt it into their place of retirement to live there for years. My mother was (almost) back at her roots!
