hempstead NY - hofstra university 10

The mighty Unispan (Warner, Burns, Toan & Lunde, 1967), spanning Hempstead Turnpike to connect the original campus with the sprawling, Modernist, parking-heavy extension to the north. I find this thing quite charming as a midcentury, structural-expressionist space-age statement piece - behold the thinness of our concrete! The alternating dark and light zones give it some sense of atmosphere and intrigue, despite the placid institutional air and cheery posters. I also appreciate reading (via the University Library's buildings guide) that the slope was designed to be wheelchair-accessible. By right that shouldn't be a big deal, but it's noteworthy for 1967.
