Phaeophyscia decolor (dry) - a photo on Flickriver

            Phaeophyscia decolor 'Sunburst Shadow Lichen' is a gray brown to brown (dry) foliose lichen without soredia, isidia or hyaline hairs near the lobe tips. Apothecia are common and often have a corona of rhizines around the lower margin. This is a rare S1 lichen in Alberta. I chose it over the similar and more common P. ciliata for three reasons. The lobes are all under 0,5 mm wide, the apothecia do not exceed 1.2 mms and the substrate is bare rock. P. ciliata is generally found on bark and rarely on mossy bark.
