gaslight-screentest-2 - a photo on Flickriver

            neurosis [ gaslight ] first set of tests. 

animation created in Processing, with an array of words and phrases collected from people who have survived verbally & emotionally abusive relationships. 

my prompt soliciting these words and phrases was "what words were repeatedly used as a weapon against you, such that you can remember this language even years later." there was a remarkable symmetry of language use in the responses, which came from majority women, and a few men. more than twenty people contributed language to the project, as did I.

I'm sampling colors from photographs of bruised people pulled from google image search. the browser screens full of selfies reminds me that we live in a culture that teaches us to be abusive to each other.

this work moves some heavy water for me. some of the respondants reported feeling stirred, blocked, and/or otherwise turned a bit sideways by rethinking their experiences for this work. even the act of writing down the words was too much for more than one person.

All of this has invited me to more tenderness, more compassion, with the content and with us. Progress is slow. I think though that this (these) images are a good example of strong starting point for the work. It has its feet.
