I was young when I left home - a photo on Flickriver

            Breathless 
after the last minute scramble 
navigating Yangon's traffic 
in a hastily flagged down taxi 
to Aung Mingmar Highway bus station 

Relief 
sitting in the waiting area 
of the bus company 
that will ferry us to Hpa-An 
at an indistinct point of time 
in the next few hours 

Yellow 
light streams in 
against the deep yellow walls 
paint peeling off...
The unstoppable process of aging 

Regally 
sitting against the wall 
a back straighter than mine 
a face more serious than mine too 
eyes alive 
looking at me 
cheroot held between steady fingers 

I point my camera at her 
and gesture a wordless question 
may I shoot you, I ask 
she smiles and poses 
I show her the photo 

Mutters 
something in Burmese 
then I hear a Mingalar-bar 
and feel a little joy 
at having understood something 

Hpa-An 
is where I'm headed 
she is overjoyed 
'Kyaiktiyo' she exclaims 

Go to Kyaiktiyo 
translates the old Indian lady 
sleeping by her side 
and then helpfully 
shows us a photo of her son 
and his daughter 

The walls watch us 
in silence
