‘The Hengebach castle in the beautiful German city of Heimbach in the Eifel region is a castle with a story’

Today the castle houses the prestigious Heimbach International Art Academy. It is now owned by the town of Heimbach, but has had several owners since the Middle Ages. A lot has happened in and around the castle over the years and everything breathes history. There were first some other owners before the devious Gerhard von Monterberg had the castle in his possession. The lax Von Monterberg did not have his security in order at the time and that was the opportune opportunity for the villainous and ambitious Balderich von Drenthe to make a successful attack on the castle with a partner in crime in which Von Monterg was mercilessly murdered. The castle remained in Balderich's hands for a number of years. After his death, the castle again passed into different hands and through successions, among other things, it was owned by the respected von Hengebach family for about two hundred years. This came to an end with the tragic death of Everhard III around 1237. Until the end of the 18th century, the infamous castle belonged to the Counts and Dukes of the Duchy of Jülich until the French revolutionary troops overthrew the Duchy. The French state then became the owner, but sold it again years later to the wealthy Fraikin family from Heimbach. Meanwhile, the castle was almost completely destroyed by fire, leaving only a ruin. The family used the remainder of the castle as a quarry and around 1904 they wanted to blow up the castle because of the danger of collapse. A group of local residents found this appalling and formed an association for the preservation of the castle. They managed to have it bought by the Heimbach municipality. It would be turned into a local museum and fully restored. However, the castle was completely destroyed in the Second World War. The war had made the municipality poor and it was temporarily rented out to a brewery from Düsseldorf, which partially restored it and operated a restaurant and hotel in it. In 2009 the castle was completely reserved by the municipality, but many people from Heimbach think it is terrible that modern building elements have been added to the castle. However, tourists find the castle and the surroundings beautiful and are impressed. I took this photo from this specific angle to show the history even better, but also because the entire castle has been photographed in its entirety so many times that I thought it would be nice to show it from this side.

Tegenwoordig herbergt het kasteel de prestigieuze Heimbach International Art Academy. De burcht is nu eigendom van de stad Heimbach, maar heeft sinds de middeleeuwen meerdere eigenaren gehad. Er is door de jaren heen veel gebeurd in en rond het kasteel en alles ademt historie. Voordat de sluwe Gerhard von Monterberg het kasteel in zijn bezit kreeg, waren er eerst nog wat andere eigenaren. De lakse Von Monterberg had op dat moment zijn veiligheid niet op orde en dat was de uitgelezen kans voor de vileine en ambitieuze Balderich von Drenthe om met een partner in crime een succesvolle aanval op het kasteel te doen waarbij Von Monterg genadeloos werd vermoord. Het kasteel bleef een aantal jaren in handen van Balderich. Na zijn dood kwam het kasteel weer in andere handen en door erfopvolging was het onder meer ongeveer tweehonderd jaar eigendom van de gerespecteerde familie von Hengebach. Daar kwam een ​​einde aan met de tragische dood van Everhard III omstreeks 1237. Toeristen vinden het kasteel en de omgeving echter wel prachtig en zijn altijd diep onder de indruk ervan. Ik heb deze foto vanuit deze specifieke hoek genomen om de geschiedenis nog beter tot zijn recht te laten komen, maar ook omdat het kasteel zo vaak in zijn geheel is gefotografeerd dat het me leuk leek om het van deze kant te laten zien.
