Novi Avion Fighter

The biggest goal of the Yugoslav Air Force during its existence was the production of an indigenously designed Advanced Fighter Aircraft, a status that very few Nations were able to achieve during the Cold War. The objective was to make the Yugoslav Air Force self-sufficient in terms of Fighter Aircraft and increase its political independence from foreign suppliers, allowing Yugoslavia to remain neutral and able to influence other Nations as a result.

The goal was to replace the existing fleet of 120 ageing Mig-21s with a new fighter (Novi Avion meaning New Aircraft) capable of performing multiple tasks, like air-defense, ground-attack and aerial reconnaissance. The first design created by them looked like the IDF Lavi project with a single massive air entrance under the fuselage and a delta-canard wing configuration with two angles.
