Many Nations showed great interest on the G.I including Belgium, Finland, Turkey, Hungary and Switzerland but they never finished their acquisition. Sweden eventually ordered 90, while Denmark ordered 12 (armed with the Madsen cannon).

During the presentation of the Fokker G.I, the Spanish Civil War was still going on and the Republican Government purchased 26 planes; however, due to the international embargo, the planes (although paid and finished) were never delivered to their intended owners, instead they were left on the runway on The Netherlands (unarmed) waiting for a new owner.

When the Germans invaded The Netherlands on 10 May 1940, around 23 airframes were combat ready and since they were the most advanced fighters of the Dutch Air Force, they were heavily involved in the first aerial battles. Sadly, many were destroyed on the group by the first German Air raids, one airbase losing all but one of their fighters.

At the end of the first day of the Invasion, only three airframes remained air worthy. Over the next few days, more planes were repaired using parts from other damaged planes resulting in 14 confirmed aerial kills against German Ju-52s Transports and other planes. They were also employed on ground attack missions.

With the Dutch surrender, some were captured by the Germans and used as trainers and target tugs for some time.
