The Colossi of Memnon, West Bank, Luxor, Egypt.

            The two faceless Colossians of Mémnon, rising majestically about sixteen feet in the plain, are the first monument that tourists see when they visit the west bank. The figures on the throne held a solitary vigil over the changing landscape, and few visitors are aware that these giants were merely an element of what was once the largest temple ever built in Egypt, the memorial of Amenhotep III, which is believed, occupied an area larger than Karnak.

The magnificent colossi, each carved in a single block of stone and weighing a thousand tons, were a major tourist attraction during the Greek-Roman period, when the statues were attributed to Mémnon, the legendary African king defeated by Achilles during the War of Troy.
