The Baptistry of the Cathedral is a place of history, art and faith.

A place of history, full of centuries, because it was built by John Champion in 1340, it is, however, the heir of the ancient baptistery which, since the beginning of Christianity, stood near the Cathedral, founded in the fifth century.

Always linked to the Cathedral, the Baptistery was built first in S. Maria Maggiore, the church that until the fifteenth century formed with the ancient church of St. Vincent one cathedral premises. Detached from the Santa Maria Cathedral, the Baptistery was dismantled in 1660 and placed first in the cloister of the Canonica and then, in 1898, in front of the Cathedral, where it still stands.

Place of art, because the Baptistery is also a monument enclosing among other artistic elements two important sculptural cycles carved by John Champion, eight panels depicting the most salient episodes from the life of Jesus Christ (Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation to Tmpio, Baptism, Capture and Condemnation, Crucifixion, Deposition and Resurrection) inside the Baptistery and, to the outside edges, the statues of the theological Virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity), the Cardinal Virtues (Justice, Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance ), plus the virtue of patience to complete the octonary. The original architectural elements, Gothic admittedly, were completed during the relocation, making a complete building and autonomous oigine in what was to be a kind of graceful and aerial newsstands above the baptismal font.

But the Baptistery, is above all a place of faith, where the scripts are baptized Christians and begin the journey testimony of their commitment to Christ, supported by Thanks received in Baptism and nourished by the other sacraments. Place that in its form, the octagon, refer to the fullness of God's gift, the resurrection of Christ, the new creation, of which Baptism is a sign. Place where you are immersed in water, a gesture that is symbolic of the death and resurrection of all the baptized in the saving death and glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Place that recalls the Christian roots of our city and of our civilization.
