Rue Victor-Hugo, Vienne - Chapelle de Pipet

Vienne (French pronunciation: [vjɛn]) is a commune in southeastern France, located 32 kilometres (20 mi) south of Lyon, on the river Rhône. It is only the fourth largest city in the Isère department, of which it is a subprefecture, but was a major center of the Roman empire.

Before the arrival of the Roman armies, Vienne was the capital city of the Allobroges, a Gallic people. Transformed into a Roman colony in 47 BCE under Julius Caesar, Vienne became a major urban center, ideally located along the Rhône, then a major axis of communication. It was to Vienne in 7 CE that Augustus banished King Herod Archelaus, so the Herodian family may have had land there. The town later became a Roman provincial capital. Numerous remains of Roman constructions are still visible in modern Vienne. The town was also an important early bishopric in Christian Gaul. Its most famous bishop was Avitus of Vienne. At the Council of Vienne, convened there in October 1311, Pope Clement V abolished the order of the Knights Templar. During the Middle Ages, Vienne was part of the kingdom of Provence, dependent on the Holy Roman Empire, while the opposite bank of the Rhône was French territory, thus making it a strategic position.

Today, the town is a regional commercial and industrial center specializing in the food industry. Tourism is also a major part of the town's economy. Indeed, there are many important historical monuments that draw the crowds, but the annual Jazz à Vienne festival in July also makes it a popular tourist destination.

Pipet (Vienne)

Pipet is a hill and a neighborhood located east of the city centre of Vienna in Isere .

Pipet is an area located between the Pipet and Sainte-Blandine mountains.

Mount Pipet, overlooking the Viennese landscape, is located near the old Gallic street to the east, now Pipet street. Its top is built in the Roman period in a platform finished to the east by a hemicycle of 125 by 87 m, with important retaining walls still visible. This sacred area with temples forms a monumental axis with the theater and the forum below.

The site, transformed by the kings of Burgundy at the beginning of the Middle Ages into a fortress with a square keep, was given to the Church of Vienna in 1023. From 1285 it is in possession of the canons of the cathedral, while on Mount Salomon, the new castle of La Bâtie belongs to the archbishop.

In the xiv th and xv th centuries, the fortress is a stake in the conflict between the canons, the archbishop and the dolphin. At the xvi th century it was played during the religious wars and during the war between the Leaguers and Henry IV. The policy of Cardinal Richelieu against the last feudal and Huguenot culminated in a decree of 1633 ordering the destruction of the fortresses of the Dauphine . The fortifications of Pipet and La Bâtie are destroyed.

In the xix th century, this landmark is enshrined in the Viennese to the Virgin Mary , with the installation in 1858 of a statue on a brick tower and the construction in 1873 of a pilgrimage chapel in honor Of Notre-Dame de La Salette .

The site, abandoned since the dismantling of the medieval fortress Pipet the early xvii th century, is dedicated to Mary the xix th century. A statue of Volvic stone on a brick tower bearing the Virgin Mary to the child is erected in 1857 - 1858 ; Then in 1873 a chapel, designed by the Viennese architect Abel Jouffray, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Dauphiné in 1846. Inside, stained glass windows refer to the history of Viennese Christendom, The saints, the martyrs and the bishops.
