The Girl In The Park - a photo on Flickriver

            This outing was a first for buying, instead of just looking, and for personal contact. I needed a few items of make up and decided to buy them en femme, but I did not foresee how my mistakes would force me to get assistance from the staff.

Previously I have bought make up in male mode as quickly as possible. Having decided exactly what I want, I will wait near the display until nobody else is there and then stroll past, scooping up what I need on the move. I also make sure to carry a list of "things I have been told to get". Is anyone fooled? I don't know. Has anyone challenged me? No. Does anyone care? It seems not.

This time I dressed in jeans, boots and scarf, which is practically uniform for women in this weather. I began to feel myself merging with the rest of the female population as I walked in my most ladylike manner from the car park to the make up display in a superstore (Tesco) and slipped into a space between two other girls. They continued to study their choices. I was able to linger over the entire display and consider brands and colours as never before. I found a different mascara to the one I would have bought, which promises bigger, blacker lashes.

Eventually I turned away, finding myself at ladies clothing and took the opportunity to search the racks, lifting out whatever seemed nice, but nothing was perfect so I left it all behind. Now full of confidence, I thought of some food supplies I needed and went to the food shelves. This was crowded to a whole new degree. In ladieswear I walked with three or four women; this place was teeming with shoppers and trolleys. I was squeezing through little gaps, or stepping back with a murmur of "sorry". By now I was happily settled in to my feminine gait and went confidently to those few essentials. A couple of times I stopped at the end of an isle and retraced my steps as if to look for something else. In reality I was checking for anyone staring at me in amusement or trying to get a second look. In fact nobody was even looking once, which is hardly surprising when they all had their full attention on shopping.

I thought I was very clever to have visited a store with self service checkouts so I would not have to come face to face with staff and possibly start a conversation. Unfortunately I was not clever enough to notice the security tag on my new brand of mascara, which set off a flashing light when I passed it over the scanner. I had to hand it over to an assistant to remove the tag and take it back with a smile and a quiet "thanks". This was my first face to face contact and exchange of words as a female. Not a flicker of doubt appeared on the assistant's face. She was probably too bored to study the customer at all.

This unexpected encounter did, however, confuse me to the extent that I forgot to lift my change from the dispenser. I was half way to the exit when I heard "excuse me!" from behind. When it was repeated louder and closer, I had to look round. It was the same assistant running after me with my change. I gasped and said "oh, thank you very much!", she smiled politely as she put it into my hand and replied "no problem".

Unless she is a good actor, I passed the test! It put a real spring in my step and an extra wiggle in my hips as I strode merrily back to my car. This occasion called for some photographic record, so I stopped at the local park for a picture and some video before driving home.

I believe that if you send out a few strong signals of femininity and suppress all major signs of manliness then people will instantly and firmly put you in the female category. They will stick with that decision despite minor discrepancies unless faced with a glaring contradiction. First impressions do count. I aim to make female ones.
